WESTMEATH – A ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 27th marked the completion of upgrades to the Westmeath Arena, including a ramp for access.

Councillor Nicholson recorded the event for the Arena Committee Facebook page.

Nicky Berry attended as representative for the office of MPP John Yakabuskie

“What a great building you have.” She said.

Arena Committee head Brenda Grady said the ramp was critical for disabled community members, and has been a long time coming.

“We had people carried up the stairs by family.” she said. “As our population ages, the ramp becomes critical. The other use for the ramp is to bring up supplies.”

Mayor Mike Moore, of the Whitewater Region, agreed that the project was in doubt.

“We weren’t sure how or when this was going to happen.” the mayor said, noting how COVID-19 has made it a challenge to use the building as it was intended for the Westmeath community.

“We need to get out and exercise. During the [2018] flood, we were able to get out here and socialize, but with the pandemic, we can’t.”

“A building will outlast everyone.” he said. “This building makes the community.”

Also attending were JP2G consultant Ian Johnson, and contractor Sharon Godin, both who worked on the ramp project.

Grady said that they had plans despite COVID.

“We’re hoping in the new year to open in small groups.”

She mentioned a tree lighting ceremony on December 12th.
