WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Citizens gathered on Wednesday evening last week to bring their concerns before the Council of the Township of Whitewater Region. Mr. Ted Barron, who is a well-known and long-time resident of the area, presented the concerns before Council with Mrs. Alice Clarke. Mrs. Clarke had previously sat before Council with many of the same concerns on Wednesday, June 19.

Some of the concerns brought before the Council were no overnight camping in the park, the Canada flag in park had been down and was down for over a month, the aesthetic of Main Street with the lack of flowers, benches, garbage bins, and no flags.

“We have nice bins, nice planters and did have benches that had been placed there in memory of loved ones,” said Mr. Barron. One of the benches placed in memory is for Mr. Barron’s sister.

Reference was made to the beach, with regards to bird waste and no raft for swimming. Mr. Barron did note the Muskrat Watershed Council invested approximately $35 thousand with aerators. Attention was drawn to the boat launch and it’s poor condition. Councillor Charlene Jackson noted she was not able to get out as much as she wished, but when she was able, she also noted the dock’s condition.

Mr. Barron claims the “bass people have made it all most unusable,” and is hoping to see a future boat fee put in place for out-of-area visitors. Lastly, he asked Council if they were around on Saturday, August 10 to see where all Bass boats had parked. He stated they were parked at the rink and fair board property on Astrolabe Rd. in Cobden. Market vendors were said to be squeezed together and there was an auction sale happening at the same time. It is said there was no room to park and questions how they are contributing to our tourism.

Whitewater News did visit 43 Astrolabe Rd. in Cobden on Saturday, August 10 but arrived after the boats had left.
