RENFREW COUNTY (Pembroke) — On October 12, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Snow Vehicle, All Terrain Vehicle, and Vessel Enforcement/Education (SAVE) unit patrolled local ATV trails in the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Detachment area.  SAVE unit officers checked nearly 100 ATV riders on sections of the Algonquin Trail and Ottawa Valley Rail Trail (OVRT).

As a result of this trail safety initiative police laid the following charges under the Off-Road Vehicles Act (ORVA), the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and the Trespass to Property Act (TPA):

  • Fail to wear a proper helmet – three charges
  • No insurance – two charges
  • No numbered plate – one charge
  • Fail to have trail pass – trespassing – one charge

SAVE unit officers also issued eight warnings for various infractions under the ORVA and HTA. Officers also encountered a hunter who was charged for failing to produce their Possession and Acquisition License (PAL).

The mobile, four-season SAVE unit target high-risk operator behaviours on waterways and trails, regardless of season, and enhance ongoing education and enforcement activities through additional patrols, education and focused enforcement.
