Letter to CNSC requesting postponement of deadline

Dear Aimee Rupert,

We have learned that Global First Power has applied for a license for a high temperature gas-cooled molten salt nuclear reactor using enriched uranium as fuel to be constructed at Chalk River, Ontario.

We understand that the public has been invited to comment on the Project Description that was released on July 15 and that the deadline for comment is August 14th.  A 30-day comment period when people are away on holidays seems entirely unreasonable.

Old Fort William Cottagers’ Association (OFWCA) is requesting a postponement of the deadline until 30 September.

OFWCA’s members request the opportunity to comment and we find it unacceptable that the deadline is now just over one week away.  Our community is the first community downriver from Chalk River and we are among those that will be the most directly affected by these plans.  Our members are on vacation now – in their cottages with many without connection to the internet/wifi.  It is impossible for our members to comment without access to information.

Please consider a postponement if the CNSC is truly serious about the request for public comments.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Johanna Echlin, Spokesperson
Old Fort William Cottagers’ Association
