WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — It’s expected the Cobden Agricultural Hall will be filled with the sound of laughter in the evening hours this weekend, as the Cobden Community Players entertain for the 21st time.

This year’s performance is Jack of Diamonds, a play by Marcia Kash and Douglas E. Hughes. It’s about four residents in a rather luxurious, privately owned retirement home — Jack, a former jeweller who made his living buying and selling diamonds via late-night TV ads, the visually challenged techno-wizard Rose, the artistically gifted but forget Flora, and the narcoleptic beauty Blanch.

The performances are this Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The cost is $12 a person, half-price for children 12 years and younger.

The cast members are Lawrie Barton (also director), Theresa Narbonne, Grace Mick, Crystal Leach, Ted Richardson, Keith Sparling and Doug Schauer. The prompter is Bea Richardson. There are also three emcees for the event – Rob McKenzie Friday night; Shirley Ullrich Saturday night and Shirley Hill Sunday afternoon.

There is a roast beef dinner prior to the show on Friday served up by the parishioners of Grace United Church from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Saturday night is a quarter-chicken dinner prior to the show, again 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., served up by the parishioners of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

The cost for each dinner is $13 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under.

Entertainment on Friday from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. is the Valley Harmonizers while the same time Saturday night is the Cobden Jam Band.

There will also be door prizes during each performance, all of them sponsored by the cast of the play.

Proceeds from Saturday and Sunday performances go towards local charities while Sunday’s proceeds go to Guatemala projects.
