Federal election is on Monday

WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — The official election day for the federal election is on Monday. Voting will take place at the Cobden Arena, Beachburg Public School, Westmeath Fire Hall Station 5.

Advance polls were held Friday thru Monday and according to Elections Canada, roughly 4.7 million ballots were cast. This shows a 29 per cent increase in advance voting over 2015. The deadline to apply to vote by mail passed on Tuesday. 

There are 10 candidates running to represent the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. They include David Ainsworth for the People’s Party of Canada, Robert Cherrin for the Veterans Coalition Party of Canada, Dan Criger an Independent, Cheryl Gallant for the Conservative Party of Canada, Eileen Jones-Whyte for the New Democratic Party of Canada, Stefan Klietsch for the Libertarian Party of Canada, Dheerendra Kumar an Independent, Ruben Marini for the Liberal Party of Canada and Ian Pineau for the Green Party of Canada. 

Voter registration cards were mailed to residents and should be brought to the voting station with two pieces of identification (ID). If the card has not been received, ID can be brought to the polling station. Acceptable ID’s include a driver’s license and any other photo ID card issued by the federal, provincial or municipal government, along with name and current address of the voter. A full and extensive list can be found on the Elections Canada website. 

If a voter does not have an acceptable form of ID, they are still able to vote. Identity and address of the voter must be declared in writing and have someone who knows them from the polling station who can vouch for them. The voucher must be able to prove the voters identity and address.       

To vote on Monday, October 21 the voter must be a Canadian Citizen. They must prove their identity, address and be at least 18 years old on election day.
